Our stop in Coquimbo (the name means a place of "calm waters") was the first of our five stops in Chile. The Millennium Cross now towers over a town that was a favorite place of pirates and privateers.

We were greeted with music and dancing.

The commercial port exports fish and produce instead of the gold and copper from its early days.

We drove to La Serena, a neighboring city.

The Archaeological Museum in La Serena.

Along with the collection of Chili's pre-colonial artifacts is an original Moai from Easter Island.
